Today (March 23, 2009) marks World Meteorological Day. This year’s theme calls attention to the interaction between weather, climate and air quality.
A recently issued Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report concludes that the average global air surface temperature has increased about 0.74 degrees Celsius from 1905 to 2005. A warming climate can exacerbate air pollution.
And atmospheric scientists are increasingly incorporating these gases and particles emitted by human activities into climate models to better project future changes in our atmosphere.
The more meteorologists understand the weather and climate system, the better we will be able to forecast the distribution of potentially harmful atmospheric particles and gases.
