The movie "Twister"...Back in 1996, American audiences got their first real taste of storm chasing. But this first taste was really an outrageous fantasy.
In the real world of storm chasing, folks drive hundreds of miles, often only seeing sunny skies...and only occasionally catching a view of a tornado.
But the appeal is there, and the number of storm chasers continues to grow year after year.
But with this growing number, we're also seeing growing concerns. While storm chasing is exciting, it's also extremely dangerous. And the dangers may surprise you.
As a matter of fact, the greatest dangers to storm chasers are not tornadoes! Instead, the greatest dangers are traffic crashes and lightning.
Think about it...driving in heavy rain, strong winds, dust and/or hail is obviously dangerous, even to the most experienced chaser. Even the most careful driver can have problems such as misjudging distance or hydroplaning.
So one has to slow down and watch for obstacles.
The next biggest danger is lightning. It's especially dangerous because you may never see or hear the bolt which kills you. And even when lightning doesn't kill you, it can have ugly and horrifying after effects.
The advice here is to stay inside your vehicle.
And really the best advice of all when it comes to storm chasing, just leave it to the experts!
