In July, more people are struck and killed by lightning than any other time of year. And unfortunately, another fatality was reported today.
In Melbourne Beach, an elderly man was fatally struck at the beach near Ocean Avenue after suffering a direct hit (according to WESH 2 News).
"Just a little before 4 o'clock, we started receiving multiple calls that several victims, several individuals, had been affected by a lightning strike," Orlando Dominguez of Brevard County Fire said. "What can we certainly confirm is that we have transported two individuals to the hospital, one in critical condition and the other one in serious condition. We're trying to figure out if the lightning strike was actually a direct hit to the individuals, or was it just in the general vicinity. We're currently investigating that as we speak."
This time of year, we all have to play it safe. Check the latest forecast before heading to the beach. Also, stay near a lifeguard because they are very attentive to weather conditions changing and weather patterns. They will then immediately alert beachgoers.
Remember, if you hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck. Seek shelter and wait until the storm passes.
