Making sacrifices for the environment
Church leaders in England asked their parishioners to make a new kind of sacrifice during Lent this year, calling for a "carbon fast" that would reduce the carbon footprint of churchgoing Britons during the 40-day holy period.
The Right Reverend James Jones of Liverpool came up with the idea, and he was joined by the Right Reverened Richard Chartres of London and Ed Miliband, the U.K.'s energy and climate change minister, in championing the plan.
Their "fasting" suggestions included converting to more efficient light bulbs, cutting out short car trips, and turning off electronic equipment when not in use. This is all a practice that Jones himself vowed to follow.
"There is a moral imperative for those of us who emit more than our fair share of carbon to rein in our consumption," says Jones.
