Hawaii…it’s located 2000 miles out in the Pacific Ocean, and its breath-taking scenery is the perfect getaway for many, including 28-year-old John Stockton.
John visits the island to indulge his passion for kayaking. But when it comes to these waters, there’s a thin line between recreation and danger.
John’s plan is to kayak along the coast from Keahole Airport to Pololu Valley—60 miles north.
In this region, between Hawaii’s Big Island and its sister island of Maui, are treacherous waters called the Alenuihaha Channel.
Experts say all of the ocean has to funnel in between the two islands of Maui and the Big Island, and this creates a pretty strong current. It’s like the whole Pacific Ocean trying to squeeze through something.
And John…is about to experience it all first hand.
At first, his trip begins problem free. But on day three, John gets caught in the middle of a big storm.
Ten-foot waves capsize John’s boat. And eventually, he gets pushed more than 80 miles out to sea.
What’s worse is that no one knows he’s missing.
The storm gives up, but the winds only push him out further. After 48 hours adrift at sea, John passes out in his kayak.
It’s not until a lucky cell phone call that a search begins. But the harsh reality of search and rescue out in the Pacific Ocean is you blink and you miss. It’s what happened to John, and he wound up drifting at sea for five days.
A true story of suffering, struggling and survival…it came down to the bare eyeball to find John Stockton.
