Over the past year, the buzz about paper, plastic and reusable bags has grown louder and louder by the day.
In the past two years alone, four states have enacted mandatory plastic bag recycling.
But what's the big deal? Why do folks care?
Well, as we get down to the bottom of the plastic bag, you might be surprised at what is found.
In a recent study, scientists discovered that contrary to previous beliefs, plastics break down quickly. Problem is, this gives rise to yet another source of global contamination that will continue into the future.
Here are the hard facts:
Do you choose paper or plastic? Before you say paper, you need to know that the paper bag isn't looking so green either.
Each year, Americans us about 10 billion paper bags. This requires cutting down 14 million trees.
Using paper bags doubles the amount of CO2 produced, versus using plastic bags.
Plastic grocery bags require 40 to 70 percent less energy to manufacture than paper bags.
So what do you do?
First, try to not even use disposable bags...or at least reduce your use. Instead, use a reusable bag that is sturdy.
Next, reuse the disposable bags. And finally, recycle plastic and paper bags.
It's a small way to make a big difference.
