There have been 12 weather disasters that have caused more than $1 million in damages. This surpasses the nine that happened in 2008.
The total amount of damage is $52 billion, and 646 people were killed.
Here are the 12 events.
1. Central/East Groundhog Day Blizzard of Jan. 29-Feb. 3. This storm killed 36 people and caused more than $2 billion in damages.
2. Midwest/Southeast Tornadoes of April 4-5. Nine people were killed, and the losses totaled more than $2 billion.
3. Southeast/Midwest tornadoes (April 8-11). Losses totaled more than $2 billion.
4. Midwest/Southeast tornadoes (April 14-16). These tornadoes killed 38 people, and property damages exceeded more than $2 billion.
5. Southeast/Ohio Valley/Midwest tornadoes (May 22-27). The tornadoes killed 327 people
6. Midwest/Southeast tornadoes (May 22-27). Property losses totaled more than $7 billion, and 177 people died.
7. Southern Plains/Southwest drought, heat waves, wildfires. Direct losses were more than $5 billion.
8. Mississippi River Flooding. Two deaths
9. Upper Midwest flooding. Losses were estimated at $2 billion.
10. Hurricane Irene. At least 45 people killed, losses were estimated to be $8 billion.
11. Texas/New Mexico/Arizona wildfire damage. Damages in excess of $1 billion
12. Midwest/Southeast tornadoes and severe weather (June 18-22)
