Today North Dakota saw highs in the 50s.
Highs in the 50s may now sound that warm around these parts, but it is record warmth in the Northern Plains.
And while this warmer weather may feel more comfortable, it could cause quite a few problems.
There is a snow drought.
This will impact water supply, ski resorts and agriculture.
Only 22 percent of the nation was covered by snow on Jan. 4, 2012. This is definitely not normal.
2007 ranks as the second smallest areas of the U.S. with snowcover of about 27 percent.
One big impact in the short term is on the ski industry. First, there is hardly any snow falling. Even man-made snow won't work if it is too warm.
Next, the lack of snowcover across parts of the Midwest might bring trouble for winter wheat yield later this year.
Fortunately some signs are pointing to a change in the winter weather pattern...more storms and more cold.
