When severe weather strikes, we all want a safe place to go...a safe place to 'ride out the storm.'
Well, an Alabama couple took this literally when they buried an old school bus to make a creative storm shelter.
Autauga County resident James Hunter says he and his wife are ready for the next tornado.
Hunter says he purchased the old bus about five years ago after a tornado ripped through the trailer park they own on County Road 40 West.
Hunter became concerned for their tenants' safety during severe weather. And now the underground bus serves as a refuge. They even used the bus during the last tornado outbreak.
One tenant says the bus was roomy, and everyone had a nice time underground.
But how did they get the idea?
Hunter says it all came out after he looked for retainers, which were so expensive. So he got the idea of digging a hold big and deep enough to put a school bus underground!
He purchased the bus for $800, and he paid someone to dig a hole for $700.
The bus has 20 seats, and it can fit about 75 people, including those standing along the aisle.
The hole is just deep enough to cover the bus. Two air-vents are the only things that stick out of the ground. When finished, the 27 feet long bus was rolled into the nine feet deep hole and covered with dirt.
Thinking about trying this out for yourself?
