Sure we've had some chilly nights here and there. But overall, winter has been non-existent here in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry.
A big prediction comes out this week thanks to Punxsutawney Phil. Will we see six more weeks of winter or will spring come early?
Well, here are a few ideas.
For much of the season, the jet stream has been placed farther to the north. This has stopped much frigid air masses from pushing south. Not only that...but any cold air that has made it down...hasn't lasted long. If the cold air doesn't last long, then a storm can't tap into the colder air and produce snow.
It all adds up...and there is more.
We usually see our coldest temperatures the end of January. Once February starts, our temperatures gradually begin to rise. This is due to the sun rising higher in the sky, and the length of day is getting longer and longer.
It is "normal" for temperatures to get milder and milder.
Even so...on February 2nd, the bright lights of cameras will be on Phil, and he will give his prediction. If he sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter will follow. Spring will come early if no shadow appears.
Obviously, this prediction is all out of fun. And the true reminder is...winter does not end until March 20th.
So...Happy Groundhog Day!
