"I'd been hearing about the tax rebates and I didn't think they were coming out yet but I looked at it and I thought oh maybe there's a check in here," Sandi Postle tells me. So, you can't blame her for hoping this was the real stimulus check. The amount, $1200, is what she and her husband do have coming. "The amount might ring a bell for somebody," she says. "And they might think, this is it."
At first glance, the check seems official. It even has the Statue of Liberty on it. " But it is very deceptive," says Postle.
She's right about that. This is not a rebate check. It's actually from a company (Lend America with an 800 number in New York state ) offering to refinance your home. "I just don't want anyone to be fooled," Postle says. "It's easy to take advantage of people who don't quite know how to read between the lines."
In fact, the actual rebate checks won't be mailed until mid-May. And if you e-filed this year and had your tax refund direct deposited, you won't get anything in the mail. Your rebate will just be electronically deposited into your account.
For now, Postle hopes everyone is careful. She thinks the mailing she received is deceptive and could lure some people in. "It seems like these people thought of everything to convince you this was the rebate," she says. "it seems like they're using everything they can think of, except honesty."
