A lot of us have old televisions or tires that we know shouldn't be thrown in landfills. Today, folks had the opportunity to unload their old stuff at two special events -- Rennies Recycling Extravaganza and the Great Tire Roundup.
News 3's Randi Hempel was there and shows us how everyone is doing their part to
preserve planet earth.
Dozens of people are pulling up to drop off things they know shouldn't be sitting in landfills.
“It takes a lot of toxic materials out of the landfill,” explains Anne Robinson, recycling coordinator for the City of Savannah.
Things that never decompose; old computers, televisions and tires were collected.
Karen Kramer drives in with two truck loads two years worth of tires.
"We have horse trailers and hay wagons and all and we just got a collection of them and we needed to get rid of them and I'm grateful that they're taking them, it's hard to get rid of,” explains Karen Kramer. "You see a lot of them thrown out along the side of the highway, that's not a good thing.”
Now, they'll be shredded and used for things like playgrounds.
And this recycling roundup wouldn't be possible without help from volunteers.
Nicolas Johnston is from the Windsor Forest High JROTC.
"It's pretty awesome, I mean after everyone's ya'll are gone, it helps out and saves lives you know, saves, landfills, saves animals and keeps us a happy earth,” explains sophomore, Nicolas Johnston of the Windsor Forest High JROTC.
And brings in a line of happy customers.
"Convenience, convenience, I didn't have to call around the city and ask where do I drop them off, it was already advertised,” explains Benita Thomas who’s dropping off tires and VCRs.
"Primarily, what I'm saying is thank you for keeping this out of the landfill. That's really message and to keep doing what they're doing and know that we're excited about putting on these events and to continue coming back,” adds an excited Robinson.
If you weren't able to make it to today's recycling event, don't worry, we're On Your Side with the information you need to get rid of the items you don't need.
