SAVANNAH, Ga. -- In today's economy, we're all trying to do more with less money. Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire is offering help for those of us on a budget: ways to save hundreds of dollars on your groceries and household items every month and even how to get stuff for free.
Candi Pittman is your typical stay-at-home mom who works with a tight budget, but her grocery savings are anything but typical.
"We save about 70 percent of our grocery bill. Last month we were out of pocket about $260, and I got about $1500 worth of product," said Pittman.
Yes, 70 percent -- thanks to what's called couponing.
"Using coupon inserts that you get from the newspaper... There's printable coupons online, and you match those with what's on sale at the store, and you're able to get stuff for free or less than a dollar every week," she explained.
Two years ago, Pittman didn't have enough money for groceries, so a friend got her started on couponing. Now she's teaching others to do the same.
On Friday, she impressed her audience at Goodwill Industries in Savannah
"I'm pretty cheap already, but I think that there are always ways you can find to save more money," said Skye Tyler, who came for Pittman's seminar.
Tyler, who teaches classes on budgeting, is excited to share her new knowledge.
"You're thinking is 30 cents really going to save me that much, but I think Candi did a great job showing how you can get a full-price item for free," said Tyler.
Pittman says she's happy to share the wealth.
"It's worked for me, and I hope it works for somebody else, and that's what this is all about is just helping other people, because we live in a really distressing economic time and not everybody has $200 a week to spend on groceries," she said.
