Do you want to sell gold? What's the way to get the best price?

A lot of people are selling items these days to make extra money. And hundreds have gone to the Treasure Hunters Roadshow in the past few days which has been set up in south Savannah at the Armstrong Center.

"We travel from city to city, we're not appraisers, we are actual buyers," says Linda Hall, show manager. "So what we do is we buy for these collectors and we're putting money right back into the general public's hands, where it's needed."

We found people bringing all kinds of items from antique soldiers and even paintings. But a lot of them are bringing gold jewelry or coins to sell. "Half the sales that come in are probably gold jewelry and gold coins," Hall says.

Many of those coming are definitely trying to turn their gold into cash. Corbina Ike from Rincon brought some rings, necklaces and other items.

So what should you know if you're selling gold and how can you ever be sure you're getting the best price? Lowell Kronowitz, owner of Levy Jewelers, says there are a number of procedures that gold buyers should be going through before you sell your items. "There are three major carat weights of gold," he says. "One is 18 carat, 14 carat and 10 carat and all are based on a percentage of pure gold. So if someone wasn't to separate their gold by carat weight and they just want to pay you one price for everything, that in an and of itself is the first sign that it's not fair," he says.

So, Kronowitz says make sure that if you have different carat weights, that your gold is separated and priced accordingly. He also says it's important that your gold is examined with what I'd call a magnifying glass, but what is actually known as a "ten power magnification" device used by experienced people like Kronowitz. And he says there are gold testers that should be used and that your gold should always be weighed by a calibrated scale that has been approved by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

With all of that, he says he does have some issues with shows that come to town to buy gold. "I do have concerns about local people going to places where they come in from out of town," he tells me. "They really don't have any association with the community and I'm concerned about people being taken advantage of," he told me.

Kronowitz says people who come into town for a short time "don't have any great reason to give you the best price they can because they'll never see you again."

Hall told me they offer the best daily price for gold. She also told me that scales are used for each sale and that their scales for this show were examined and certified by the Georgia Department of Agriculture before the show began. (she showed me the certificate underneath one of the scales.)

"We think we are very fair with what we offer," Hall says. "You know we're not here to take anything away from any other business in town."

Corbina Ike left with a check and was happy. When I asked her if she was sure she made a good deal, she replied,"Oh, absolutely."

The show runs through Wednesday. Kronowitz says he just wants to make sure that local people with items to sell, know what to do to get the best price. He says it's not a bad idea to get several opinions. And he does admit he'd be happy to give people a price. He says while the show is leaving soon, local jewelers will look at your gold any day of the week.
