Brendan Fraser is back battling mummies, this time from China in "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor."
When the first two mummy movies raked in a fortune a third was inevitable but we are no longer in Egypt now.
Brendan Fraser returns as the American adventurer.
This time rescuing his son from a Shanghai museum.
There the mummified ancient emperor of China has been brought to life and Jet Li has the title role.
Maria Bello, the real life pride of Norristown, Pennsylvania, effectively replaces English actress Rachel Weiss as Fraser’s wife.
Though both stars look a decade too young to be believed to be the parents of a 20 something son, you'll fall into this movie quickly, which here begins to evoke an Indiana Jones yarn.
It's 1946 and they are flying in a rickety plane through the Himalayas trying to beat the rejuvenated mummy to Shangri-La, an homage to the classic movie "Lost Horizon," to prevent the mummified emperor from re-awakening his army.
Australian actor Luke Ford is their adventurous son, here mixing it up with an evil general and the emperor's ally.
Enter a yeti or two, abominable snowmen.
The special effects are marvelous as here the emperor has morphed into a three headed dragon.
And as ancient armies advance, it is modern weapons versus overwhelming odds.
“The Mummy, tomb of the Dragon Emperor has all of the elements of a big budget knock you out of your seat special effects summertime extravaganza. While some of the jokes fall flat or look forced the sweet special effects and adventurous fun are infectious. While much too violent for families, it's a top draw adventure,” said movie critic Jeffrey Lyons.
