Tropic Thunder Review

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Three comedy kings come together in the new movie 'Tropic Thunder', opening in theaters this weekend.

The movie, co-written, directed by, and co-starring Ben Stiller is a comedy dealing with a troupe of actors.

They're filming a Vietnam War epic with Robert Downey Jr., as an intense, Australian actor who'd undergone skin coloration procedures to portray an African American soldier.

Now the director of the film, seeking more authenticity, dumps them in a remote jungle with instructions to try to make their way back to civilization as the cameras roll.

But soon they become the targets of real drug smugglers and have to use the skills of the real soldiers they're portraying to survive.

Jack Black co-stars as a cocaine sniffing TV star, and Downey’s actor in the story stays in character -- here even to the extent of being offended by a casual remark.

And then he tries to bond with a comrade who's understandably perturbed at his portrayal.

Movie critic Jeffrey Lyons said, "Tropic Thunder" will have you laughing harder than any comedy this year. This edgy movie has in Robert Downey Jr., a performance worthy of Oscar consideration, even though comedies usually get short shrift. Director/screenwriter/costar Ben Stiller knows what makes us laugh.
