Journey to the Center of the Earth Review

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The latest big-screen version of Jules Verne's classic novel uses the book as jumping off point.

Brendan Fraser, also coming later this summer in "The Mummy 3", stars as a scientist whose brother has disappeared on a trek to the Earth's core.

The brother was a 'Vernian'...someone who believed Verne's book was based on fact, not fiction.

Not convinced he's dead, Fraser heads to Iceland with his nephew, played by "The Bridge to Tarabithia" and "Zathura's" Josh Hutcherson.

Icelandic born actress Anita Briem is the guide who leads them on their journey.

Fraser knows this is just fun stuff and plays it lightly, a nice contrast to Hutcherson's also appropriate more serious delivery.

Journey to the Center of the Earth" slyly uses its 3-D technology, makes allusions to pop culture, and is a thrill ride with the perfectly-cast action hero who's been in movies like this before.

Moral of the story?

Stay out of caves.
