Television will honor its best in September, and today, the Emmy nominations were announced.

The folks at "Mad Men" are very likely happy men and women.

That show, and the legal thriller "Damages", became the first basic cable programs to earn Best Series Emmy nominations.

They're both up for Best Drama, and their stars are up for acting honors, Jon Hamm for "Mad Men" and Glenn Close for "Damages".

The Best Drama competition also includes "Lost", as well as "Boston Legal", the pay cable series "Dexter", and the medical drama "House".

Holly Hunter of "Saving Grace" joins Glenn Close in the field for Best Actress in a drama.

They're facing last year's Emmy winner, Sally Field of "Brothers and Sisters", as well as Mariska Hargitay of "Law and Order SVU", and Kyra Sedgwick of "The Closer".

Three time Emmy winner, James Spader of "Boston Legal" is among six nominees for Best Actor in a drama, along with Jon Hamm.

There's also Gabriel Byrne of "In Treatment", Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad", Michael C. Hall of "Dexter" and Hugh Laurie of "House".

NBC's "30 Rock" led all comedies with 17 nominations, including Best Comedy.

Standing its way of a second straight win are NBC's hit, "The Office", as well as "Two and a Half Men", and a pair of HBO comedies, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Entourage".

"Monk"'s Tony Shalhoub has a shot at his fourth win for best actor in a comedy.

His competition includes Lee Pace of "Pushing Daisies", Charlie Sheen of "Two and a Half Men", as well as Steve Carell of "The Office" and Alec Baldwin of "30 Rock".

Baldwin's castmate, Tina Fey, is up for Best Actress in a comedy, along with last year's winner, America Ferrara of "Ugly Betty", Christina Applegate of "Samantha Who", Julia Louis

Dreyfuss of "The New Adventures of Old Christine", and Mary Louise Parker of "Weeds".

HBO's mini series about one of the founding fathers, "John Adams", walked away with the most nominations overall, 23, including Best Actor for Paul Giamatti.
