There are theater sellouts across the country filled with enthusiastic fans, as the Caped Crusader smashes into theaters for the latest Batman movie.
Batman rules over the box office, but it's Heath Ledger as the Joker creating most of the buzz.
Ledger's portrayal of a savage vicious Joker is praised as award worthy.
Ledger died six months ago at the age of 28 from an accidental drug overdose.
"This is where he would have really zoomed off 'cause I think he'll get the Oscar for it. This was his moment," said co-star Michael Caine.
While he was conspicuously missing from the movie's New York premiere, Ledger's performance is helping catapult the film into the superhero stratosphere.
Across the country, midnight showings kicked off the frenzy with rare 3 am and 6 am show times.
Hundreds of theaters are expected to continue to sell out into early next week.
And for Batman fans, "The Dark Knight" promises to cast a new light on an old tale of good verses evil.
