Actress Farrah Fawcett has died.
Fawcett succumbed to her three-year long battle with cancer Thursday morning at a Los Angeles area hospital.
She became a household name in 1976 when she splashed into American living rooms as the fresh, sexy detective Jill Monroe on "Charlie's Angels."
After just one season on the show she was catapulted into superstardom, setting a new standard for all-American good looks and sparking the biggest hairstyle trend of the decade.
For the last three years Fawcett fought an increasingly painful and difficult battle with cancer.
Just last month she went public with her fight by allowing a graphic and candid documentary about her struggles.
She was first diagnosed with cancer in late 2006.
After various treatments she appeared to be on the road to recovery, but in 2008 the disease came back worse than before.
Her longtime companion, actor Ryan O'Neal, was by her side when she died at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica.
Their son Redmond, who was recently re-arrested on drug charges, didn't get to say goodbye in person.
Ryan O'Neal released this statement:
"She now belongs to the ages. I loved her with all my heart. She was in and out of consciousness. I talked to her all through the night. She's in a better place now."
Fans are also gathering at her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, leaving flowers and mourning the loss of a beautiful and courageous American icon.
