It's been one of the most anticipated films of the year and it finally arrived in theaters early Friday morning.

The "Twilight" sequel "New Moon" is poised to have one of the biggest box office openings of the year.

Rabid fans lined up around the country for midnight screenings.

Not an outer-space extravaganza but something much more romantic.

A story of forbidden love.

"It's like Romeo and Juliet," said hollywood.com’s Paul Dergarabedian.

That combination made "Twilight" a movie smash a year ago.

And has fans ravenous for the follow up, "New Moon".

This star crossed romance between vampire and mortal started as a hit series of books.

"Twilight" the movie raked in more than 380 million dollars worldwide.

It turned Kristen Stewart into an instant sensation.

"I was terrified to be perfectly honest," said Stewart.

And brought super hunk status to Robert Pattinson.

"You start seeing all these entertainment shows where they start asking celebrities what did you think of twilight?" said Pattinson.

The film even made a star of Forks, Washington, the small town that provides its setting.

It's devotion that's earned the film's fans the nickname "twi-hards".

"We hear screaming. We see crying. It's just amazing to see these fans and the kind of fan support we have," said actor Taylor Lautner.

Enough that "New Moon" broke records for advance ticket sales.

"I think twilight was just a warm-up for the box office juggernaut that is going to be new moon," Dergerabedian said.

Fans of the Twilight saga already have.
