Putting off taking care of your own health can backfire. And that's especially true when it comes to your breast health.
One Savannah woman hopes her story will help others understand that procrastination can cause fear. Tina Tyus-Shaw introduces us in tonight's Buddy Check 3 report.
"It was always on my mind, but it was I'll do it tomorrow. I'll do it tomorrow; I'll do it.Tomorrow and tomorrow never came.” Tanya Milton loves family gatherings. Day in and day out she's keeping the spirit and love of her family alive. One way, preaching the importance of good breast health.
"I encourage my daughters to keep up with their health. There's a lot of things going on right now, but the sooner you can detect there is a problem the better off you'll be."
Tanya is a witness. The Vice-President and Director of Marketing for the Savannah Tribune got her wake-up call at a press conference about the Breast Test & More program. It helps uninsured or underinsured women pay for mammograms.
Tonya decided to apply for the service, and after eight years of putting her annual mammogram on the backburner she was back on track.
"They called me back to tell me they had seen something different, and I needed to come in and do another examination. It kinda frightened me."
Turns outs Tonya’s okay.
"You're here today…what are you most thankful for?
“I'm thankful for peace of mind that everything is okay…that my health is good. I'm thankful most of all for my family."
Tanya's living proof that paying attention to your breast health can save your life.
