Visit Pooler's Senior Citizen's Center and you'll find a group of ladies cutting a rug and enjoying some of the best days of their lives. Kay Sapp says that’s important. "We want people to know that due to the fact that we do have the senior centers available that loneliness does not have to be a way of life." Happiness carries a lot of weight at the center, but good health matters most.
One priority, getting an annual mammogram.
Annie Brown is one of 8 senior adults taking advantage of Saint Joseph's/Candler's Mobile Mammography Unit. "It's convenient because I live here," she says.
First pre-screening …it doesn't take long. "I think I'm a little late this time, but y'all caught up with me . I'm glad you did." Mammography Technician Kimberly Jones is always happy to see senior adults getting a mammogram because research shows most breast cancers are diagnosed in women 50 years old and over. "I have some that ask do I still need to get a mammogram…I'm 75, I'm 80. I still tell them yes you still should get your mammogram every year because you can still have a chance of developing breast cancer," Kim says.
And just think -- making the choice to have a mammogram could save your life.
Annie know that all too well. "I take it real seriously because cancer is not something you can play with. The earlier you catch it the better off you will be."
Just like she doesn't miss a beat will dancing and exercising with her fellow seniors Annie says she won't miss a beat in the future with her breast health. "I think we should have our exams on time, and if you have any change or anything that you think has not been there like soreness or anything then let your doctor know about it."
Annie should get her result in a couple of weeks.
