You've heard it a million times... You should drink at least eight eight-ounce glasses of water every day.
Why is water so important to your health? If you aren't drinking enough water (that's W-A-T-E-R, not just liquid -- sodas don't count), here are just a few reasons to make water part of your day, every day:
Your Skin: Water hydrates your skin, helping it stay supple and staving off the aging process.
Your Immune System: Water powers your immune system. If you don't drink enough water, your body may be less resistant to infections.
Your Back: When it comes to back pain, dehydration can make a bad thing worse. The disks within our backs are filled with fluids and act like shock absorbers. If you are prone to back pain, water is a must.
Your Liver: Drinking more water helps your liver detoxify your body.
Your Energy: Water helps your body run more efficiently and helps keep your energy levels up. Even mild dehydration can make you feel lethargic.
Your Head: Dehydration can be a headache trigger, especially if you have a history of migraine headaches. Seventy-five percent of your brain is made up of water -- if you don't take in enough water a headache can be one of the first signs of dehydration.
Your Breath: Saliva is well-oxygenated and full of enzymes that help control bacteria in the mouth; bad breath may be a signal that your body needs more water.
If you find it difficult to drink enough water each day, do keep trying, and make these foods with a high water content part of your diet: watermelon, strawberries, grapefruit, cantaloupe, peaches, lettuce, cucumbers, celery, radishes and zucchini.
