Pink ribbons accent trees along Abercorn Street…ribbons representing October … breast cancer awareness month. People with a common desire to fight the disease will paint the town pink . The Savannah Morning News, Saint Joseph's/Candler and Comcast
have joined forces for the awareness campaign. Wednesday your morning news paper will be pink. " The Savannah Morning News will donate 10 cents for every single copy sold in racks or inside store locations. We will also donate 10 dollars for every new subscription sold during the month of October," says Publisher Michael Traynor.
The pink message is serious. Every three minutes, a woman in the United States learns that she has breast cancer, making it the leading cause of death among women second to lung cancer. "You need to take charge in your life. we need to fight cancer not just survive cancer. By taking charge that means going out and doing your baseline self breast exams every month having your clinical breast exams every year, starting your mammograms at 40 yearly," says Breast Cancer Survivor Stephanie O’Quinn
Bottomline, if we close our eyes we're never going to make progress. Saint Joseph's/Candler is going the extra mile. They're bringing thier Mobile Mammography Unit to you.
The goal giveaway 100 mammograms in one day. "We can't expect people who don't have transportation to try to get to where you are. So we're going to where the people are, and then the second thing is its done whether you can afford it or not,” says the hospital President and CEO Paul Hinchey.
Mark October 27th on your calendar. The mobile unit will be at Savannah Morning News for free mammograms. These mammograms are for uninsured and underserved women in our community. There are some other stipulations, so you should call the Telfair Pavilion for more information at 819-7000.
