A big pink ribbon decorates the Lewis Cancer pavilion. Inside people are eating pink, but it's making them think about beating a killer. "Here in Georgia and in Savannah we have a lot of women diagnosed with stage 3 or 4 breast cancer because they cannot afford to have a mammogram," says Wanda Jones, Oncology Outreach Coordinator.
In celebration of breast cancer awareness month people are flipping pink Yoplait Yogurt lids and saving them to make a difference. "We get ten cents per lid and it will help women with educational information as well as free mammograms," explains Jones. You may not realize it, but every ten cents adds up to fight a disease that is diagnosed in women every 3 minutes.
Juanita Osborne says saving lids to save lives is a great way to increase awareness.
"I think it's a good idea. I think more women die of breast cancer than anything else.
my daughter has breast cancer." Maybe one day we will not have to hear those words.
The collection boxes benefit everyone because it brings doctors and scientists closer to a cure. "Money at the grassroots level in our own home is as well as the national effort is the utmost importance," says Breast Cancer Survivor Nancy Francis
Pink lids for the cure is a national fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The national organization will send the money back to our local Coastal Georgia affiliate.
