Despite tough economic times, a lot of people are still spending money on their pets. In fact, sales of pet products are expected to climb this year. And that has retail giant wal-mart trying to get its paws on more pet owners.
The economy has gone to the dogs, but a lot of dogs are doing just fine.
Dog owner Tali Barak says "we spend a lot of money on our dogs, but to me it's worth it."
Tali Barak still pampers her pug Ozzy.
She buys him gifts even though she's cut back on things for herself.
Tali says "I don't have any kids and he's kind of like my baby. I take care of him."
The American Pet Products Association estimates spending on pets grew 3% to 5% in 2008 at a time when most stores are struggling to make sales.
The nation's largest retailer has taken notice.
Wal-Mart spokesperson Daniel Morales says "and we want to be their destination for pet care at a low and reasonable price."
Wal-Mart has expanded its pet care sections at many stores, hoping to compete more heavily with specialty pet chains like Petsmart and Petco.
And Wal Mart's stocking more luxury pet items, because most pet owners are still buying premium food and they're still buying gifts for their dogs and cats.
Daniel Morales says "pets are like family members and they want to take care of them so they want to buy premium brands and items that are fun for them."
Not everyone's buying premium in tough times.
But then there's Barbara Watts, who just spent hundreds on Christmas gifts for her three dogs.
Dog owner Barbara Watts says "I let them walk in the store and they pick out what they want and they buy it."
Evidence of why more retailers may see pets as a good bet in a down market.
