The Telfair Breast Care Center at St. Joseph’s Candler offers digital mammography imaging. It is the latest in breast health technology. One of the biggest advantages to having this digital equipment is the time it saves. Images are available in a matter of seconds, so the technician can assess the images right away instead of scheduling follow up appointments. Over 100 patients are seen daily, so manager Lora Sapp says the time saved is a big help.
“The advantages are many for the patient,” Sapp said. “The most important, the time it saves. There is also less anxiety for the patient, and the procedure is more comfortable due to some new upgrades in flexible paddles and their compression and different things like that.”
Dr. John Gouse, radiologist and director of the Telfair Breast Care Center, says he can easily manipulate digital images to make a better assessment. This was not possible with film pictures.
“With the digital technology, we can magnify the images, assess density and take measurements, all on the computer screen,” Gouse said.
According to Sapp, 40,000 American women die each year from breast cancer. She says upgrading to digital technology is an expensive endeavor, but a worthwhile one. Converting to digital imaging can range from $200-$350, 000.
