(Savannah) Connie and Chris Helton are ready to bring a double dose of life into the world… twins. But there's a setback. “I just happened to reach up and feel a knot and knew that that was not supposed to be there. It was about the size of a golf ball," says Connie. It was breast cancer. Connie's reaction … "I'm too young for all this. I'm to young to die and leave them and, you know, leave my husband to take care of them." The diagnosis floored Chris, but his wife's strong will gave him hope. "When Connie said I'm going to be able to fight this and I'm not going away," says Chris. Connie's mastectomy did not cause a threat to the babies, but pre-term contractions forced her in the hospital until the babies are born. Connie says being pregnant with breast cancer is a blessing. "Part of me thinks that If I wasn't pregnant I wouldn't have found the tumor and that it probably would have spread farther than it did."
Connie's determined to beat a killer and her faith and support are helping her win. "I'm a little nervous I guess just from the unknown, but we've got a lot of people that have offered to help and so I think we'll get through this." Connie Helton will be 35 weeks into her pregnancy on Wednesday. Her Oncologist, Dr. Mark Taylor, has scheduled chemotherapy one week after the twins are born.
