Getting SUAFY!

By: Kim Gusby ,

What is "SUAF"... and how do you get "SUAFY"? It's the new buzz around town in preparation for next week's Savannah Urban Arts Festival.
Organizers hope the six day event will foster dialogue between area young people, citizens, and civic leaders about ways to create positive change in our community. They've even developed their own lingo. "We have several little sayings... 'suafilicious', 'suaftastic', 'get suafy', and then the most important one 'get suaf for change', which means the Savannah Urban Arts Festival", says AWOL, Inc. co-founder Tony Jordan. Jordan and his wife DaVena are also organizers of SUAF. "It's just about promoting art and showing how art can be used as a tool to drive kids in a positive direction", Jordan says. "Better yet, the community in a more positive direction."

Some of the highlights of the event include a lecture series and panel discussion featuring president and CEO of Manchester Bidwell Corporation, Bill Strickland and hip-hop journalist and author Jeff Chang. A benefit performance by Savannahian and 2009 Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Anthony David is also scheduled.

Here’s another way you can get “SUAFY”. Next Thursday, May 7, Kokumo Collective Dance Company will present their first dance concert- “Kokumo Live: The Passion of Dance” as part of the Savannah Urban Arts Festival. The event gets underway at 7:30 pm at Savannah High School's auditorium.
