Chemical bomb explodes, Indiana teens arrested

Two Indiana teenagers who said they set out to “wreak havoc and destruction in Savannah, Georgia,” with what they described as “works bomb” are in jail. A chemical mixture was set off Tuesday morning, causing an explosion behind Pride Pool and Spa in the Savannah Festival shopping center near GA 204 and Interstate 95.

The property was under surveillance video, which captured the teens' actions.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police arrested Taylor Sandlin and Kenneth Smock, both 17 and residents of Indianapolis, shortly after the teens returned to the scene of the explosion to video police and firefighters at work.

A West Chatham Precinct sergeant spotted the pair at a convenience store not far away. They were in the car captured on the pool store’s video surveillance. The two were taken into custody without incident.

Police also recovered the camcorder the teens used to record their actions. The teens were arraigned Wednesday in Recorder’s Court. The judge set each of their bonds at $10,000 and barred them from Chatham County - except for court appearances - upon release.

They had been in Savannah less than 24 hours before the explosion. Metro investigators are working with Indianapolis authorities to see if the two are linked to several similar incidents also captured on their camcorder.
