Dump the Pump day encourages Savannahians to experience downtown Savannah as it was originally planned for pedestrian activity. Furthermore, alternative modes of transportation, like bicycling, taking the bus, walking and carpooling, reduce fuel consumption and traffic congestion while providing other benefits to individuals and the community.
The Savannah Development and Renewal Authority (SDRA) in partnership with the City of Savannah, Chatham Area Transit Authority (CAT), Savannah Bicycle Campaign and the Pedestrian Advocates of the Coastal Empire are promoting Dump the Pump: Leave Your Car At Home Day on Friday, April 18, 2008.
The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about the benefits of using alternative modes of transportation and to encourage people from throughout the community who travel to downtown (employees, residents, students, shoppers and diners) to commute by walking, carpooling, and riding bicycles, skateboards, scooters or public transportation.
On April 18th, CAT will allow passengers boarding with a bicycle to pay 25 cents per trip in lieu of the regular $1.00 fare. New, detailed maps have been developed that identify the location of bicycle lanes, bicycle racks, and free shuttle routes. These maps will be available at The Bicycle Link at 408 MLK, Islands Bikes & Boards at 14 W. State Street, and Coastal Scooter at 645 E. Broughton.
