Cobb County police have charged a high school music teacher with sexually assaulting a student.
Police arrested 32-year-old Steven Martin Parkman of Dallas, a Harrison High School teacher, late Monday afternoon.
Cobb County police spokeswoman Cassie Reece says the department's Crimes Against Children Unit was contacted by school officials about allegations of a sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl, who is a student at Harrison High School.
She says Parkman is charged with sexual assault and is in custody at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. His bond is set at $35,000.
Reece says the allegation does not necessarily point to rape. She says under Georgia law, even if sexual contact were consensual, it would be considered sexual assault because the teacher has supervisory or disciplinary authority over a student.
Parkman has been employed with the Cobb County School System for four years. In February, he was honored as the Student and Teacher Achievement Recognition program teacher of the 2007-2008 year for Harrison High School.
A spokesman for Cobb County Schools, Jay Dillon, says Parkman resigned from his job Friday.
