Memorial Honors Fallen Charleston Firefighters

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The names of nine Charleston firefighters killed in a June 18 furniture store blaze have been added to a memorial at the South Carolina Fire Academy.

The men's names were inscribed as part of a ceremony Wednesday honoring the 11 South Carolina firefighters who died in the line of duty last year. The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that a Wagener firefighter and U.S. Forest Service firefighter were also

honored.

The memorial plaza now includes 90 names.

Last month, state lawmakers approved a bill that would name a nearly 4-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 17 in honor of the fallen Charleston firefighters. The stretch of road runs by the Sofa Super Store site, which the city hopes to turn into a memorial.
