Today Fort Stewart planted five more trees at Warriors Walk in honor of five soldiers who were killed in Iraq.
Staff sergeant Ernesto Cimarrusti, Corporal Robert McDavid, Corporal Scott McIntosh,
Sergeant First Class Shawn Suzch and Staff Sergeant David Julian.
The addition of these five trees brings the total to three hundred and ninety eight.
News Three’s Military Reporter Alice Massimi was there as friends and family paid tribute to their fallen heroes.
Under crystal blue skies and surrounded by Eastern Red Bud Trees five Third Infantry Division Soldiers were honored.
Five men, members of the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq.
“Know that these soldiers loved their country and did their duty and exhibited selfless service so that our nation could remain free and our people enjoy the blessings of liberty.”
Angela Suzch says she is full of pride but the day is an emotional one and one full of memories.
“The last time he told me he loved me stuff like that,” recalls Angela as she tries to hold back tears.
Suzch was also a father; his daughter was born in September. He saw her for the first and only time when he came home on R and R. Described as a family man by those who worked with, Suzch was also said to be a great soldier.
“A really, really outstanding person, dedicated. All the soldiers looked up to him. I looked up to him, just a real professional,” says SFC Casey White who worked with Suzch during their last deployment.
Next to Suzch's Tree is one for Corporal Robert McDavid. Known to his family as Taylor he grew up wanting to be a tanker in the military.
“I am very honored that the people of America have honored Taylor this way, the sorrow that we have lost our son,” says his father Robert.
While he hopes no more trees will have to be planted he sadly acknowledges, that'll not be the case.
