A house called home, that's what the folks at the Old Savannah City Mission are calling their newest "Fresh Start" facility devoted to women in transition after spending time in jail. NEWS 3's Tristan Tully was at the house dedication today and has more about what the mission's hopes and goals are for its future residents.
Everyone deserves another chance in life, that's one of the Old Savannah City Mission's mottos. At the dedication ceremony, it's something they reflect on and hope transfers over to A House Called Home's residents, women trying to start over after coming to faith in Christ while in prison.
Connell Stiles, Director of Development for the Old Savannah City Mission
"Our goal is simply that first they continue first the walk that they have with Christ and along with that, transition into the community so that they become viable citizens. Viable tax paying citizens."
They plan on doing that by teaming the women up with life coaches and mentors to help them get back into society, something that Reverend Jim Lewis, the Mission's director whole heartedly believes in, "We want to be a part of that life that Jesus brings and women can find new hope and new strength and new purpose in life. They don't have to come out of prison and go back to the street corner or go back to some jerk that's been beating them up. They can find purpose in life."
As folks take a tour of the home, celebrating the new life to come out of it's walls, Reverend Lewis is just humbled to be a part of such a great undertaking that will influence women in our society, "That's the driving force in the Old Savannah City Mission and we believe that God can redeem and he wants to give people a fresh start in life and (long pause), it's good to be a part of that."
If you'd like to help the Old Savannah City Mission, they need donations and volunteers. Right now their major needs are clothes, supplies for the Fresh Start home and as always, they appreciate your volunteer hours or monetary donations.
The Mission is located at 2414 Bull Street.
You can also call them at 232-1979.
