It appears to have caused no major injuries or damage, but it's got residents across the Midwest talking this morning.
A 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook the region just after 4:30 a.m. It was centered six miles from West Salem, Illinois, and was strong enough to rattle skyscrapers in Chicago's Loop and homes in Cincinnati.
Bonnie Lucas, a morning co-host at WHO-AM in Des Moines, Iowa, says she was sitting in her office when she felt her chair move and heard the ceiling creak. She says the shaking lasted about 5 seconds.
Geophysicist Randy Baldwin at the U.S. Geological Survey says the quake was "fairly large" for the region, but is the type that might occur "every few years." The last earthquake in the region
close to the strength of this morning's tremor was a 5.0 magnitude in 2002.
