Travel + Leisure Golf recently recognized The Ford Plantation in Savannah, Ga. as one of “America’s Top 100 Golf Communities” for the third consecutive year.

“We’re truly honored to receive this prestigious national honor,” said C.W. Canfield, director of golf at The Ford Plantation. “The Ford Plantation continues to be recognized for its uncompromising commitment to quality, which includes a stellar golf experience, outstanding teaching and practice facilities, and a spectacular natural setting. The fact that our members never need a tee time and enjoy a spacious 600-acre layout, which is nearly three times the size of a standard golf course, certainly may have factored into this award as well.”

Travel + Leisure Golf provided The Ford Plantation, one of the nation’s top luxury communities and private sporting clubs, with a special award certificate, which is proudly on display in the golf clubhouse. 2008 marks the third year that the magazine has recognized the nation’s leading golf communities in a special annual issue.

“This award honors communities which best combine superb golf with homes and facilities of the highest quality, an extraordinary location and a wealth of lifestyle opportunities,” said John Atwood, Travel + Leisure Golf’s editor-in-chief.

The Ford Plantation boasts a challenging 18-hole golf course designed by Pete Dye, who called the impressive layout “arguably my best Southern design.” The course features a Scottish Highlands and Lowcountry-inspired layout which offers a parkland-style front nine with trees and water, followed by a links-style back nine that opens onto dramatic marsh views.

A limited number of luxurious homes and cottages overlook the community’s impeccable golf course in an effort to preserve the ambiance created by Pete Dye. The Ford Plantation features a low-density design, with only 400 home sites strategically located on 1,800 acres.

Several Walker Cup players, including Kyle Stanley and Tom McKnight, have played the course at The Ford Plantation to prepare for the event.

In addition to world-class golf facilities, The Ford Plantation offers an on-site day spa, deepwater marina, world-class equestrian center, hunt club privileges, state-of-the-art fitness center, staff naturalist and casual and gourmet dining. This award-winning community also features more than 10 miles of scenic horse, biking and hiking trails.
