About your local MDPS: When kids go to school, most start the day with a hearty breakfast and a healthy lunch. Sadly, many children in Savannah start their day in a different way. They may not get breakfast at all and often go to school hungry. When we occasionally miss a meal, we feel weak and can hardly wait until we eat again. For many poor children, hunger is a grim reality, a daily occurrence. For some, the only food they will get during they day is what they get at school.
Several Federal, State and Local programs do provide food, but these fall short in that they do not provide food at some key times, namely during mid-morning and after school. These are times when snacks and meals are really needed. The Martin Deporres Society fills these gaps in public funded programs. During the school year, the Society provides (through our Nourish 2 Learn Program) about 1200 mid-morning snacks to needy Savannah children every day and about 200 hot meals daily (in partnership with the Food Bank and the Savannah-Chatham county Public Schools). The cost per child is less than $1.00 per week and is totally paid for by donations to the Society.
The Martin de Porres Society was started in 1986 by Dr. George and Yolanda Negron, longtime Landings residents. They, along with other volunteers, work tirelessly for the poor of Savannah. Providing mid-morning snacks and hot meals has been enthusiastically supported by the teachers and parents who say this is really essential and a great help to our children.
