President-elect Barack Obama announced more cabinet appointments today, including key members of his national security team.
He's nominating senator Hillary Clinton - his former rival for the democratic presidential nomination - as secretary of state.
News of Clinton’s nomination actually leaked out a couple of weeks ago. Today, Obama made it official.
After months as his rival, Hillary Clinton will now serve as Barack Obama’s chief foreign diplomat.
President-Elect Barack Obama stated, "She possesses an extraordinary intelligence and toughness, and a remarkable work ethic. I am proud that she will be our next Secretary of State."
Sen. Hillary Clinton / Secretary of State Nominee commented, "We must pursue vigorous diplomacy using all the tools we can muster to build more partners and fewer adversaries."
Restrictions on President Clinton’s foreign activities cleared the way for his wife's nomination. He's reportedly agreed to name contributors, limit overseas activities, relinquish daily management of his foundation, and submit to ethical reviews.
Obama also announced that Bush defense secretary Robert Gates will stay on at the Pentagon.
Robert Gates / Defense Secretary stated, "With a profound sense of responsibility to and for the men and women in uniform and their families, I must do my duty as they do theirs."
Also on Obama’s cabinet:
Washington lawyer Eric Holder as attorney general.
Arizona governor Janet Napolitano as homeland security secretary.
Susan Rice - his foreign policy adviser from the campaign - will serve as
Ambassador to the United Nations
And retired marine general James Jones will serve as Obama’s National Security adviser.
