A fatal collision occurred in the Lowcountry early Monday evening, leaving one dead.

The crash took place on US 17, just north of Ashepoo River, after a red minivan tried to unlawfully pass a car driven by Fatima Grajeada-Lopez. In trying to swerve to avoid an accident with the minivan, Ms. Grajeada-Lopez overcorrected and slid sideways into the north-bound lane of U.S. 17, hitting two other cars – a 2005 Ford and a Toyota Camry. The passenger in the Camry died on the way to the hospital.

The passenger was a resident of the Beaufort area.
