Metro Police have solved their tenth cold case in two years. Twenty-six-year-old Torrey Jevon Graham, of Savannah was indicted today on murder, felony murder, armed robbery and various gun charges, in the 2003 homicide of George "Danny" Johnson at B&R Motors on Montgomery Street. Graham’s arrest marks the sixth cold case solved this year by SCMPD bringing the total number of older murder cases solved to ten since 2007.
On February 27, 2003 Savannah Police responded to a shooting at B&R Motors, where they found Danny Johnson shot and unresponsive. Johnson was transported to the hospital where he later died.
On the day of the shooting, a vehicle was found to be missing from the B&R Motors lot. Several hours after the shooting, the missing vehicle was found abandoned in the 700 block of Hamilton Court. Savannah Police collected key forensic evidence from the vehicle which was processed and entered into a national database. At that time, no hits were returned.
In mid-2007, Metro Police identified Torrey Graham as a person of interest after a hit returned from the evidence catalogued back in 2003. With this lead, homicide detectives went in a new direction with the investigation. In a working partnership with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab, it was determined, through ballistic testing, that a gun taken from Graham in an unrelated case back in 2003 was the same gun used in Johnson’s homicide.
The decentralization of detectives, a project started in 2007, allows Violent Crimes personnel to expend additional resources focusing on cold cases. All homicides are reviewed regularly in hopes that new technology and new leads may help bring closure to other families of murder victims in Chatham County.
