A U.S. Navy warship will visit Savannah to take part in Pearl Harbor Day activities and enjoy some crew rest and relaxation.
The frigate USS Boone, based in Mayport, Florida, recently completed a six-month deployment in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific Ocean during which the crew interdicted 1.3 metric tons of cocaine, interacted with allied foreign navies, intercepted an illegal immigrant trafficking vessel, and rescued more than fifty migrants.
During their stay in Savannah, the Boone’s crew will take part in the Pearl Harbor Day Ceremony at 2pm on Sunday, December 7th, at the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum in Pooler. The program will include an honor guard, 21 gun salute, patriotic speakers and readings and music. The crew will also march in the Lighted Parade which begins on West River Street at 5:30pm on Saturday.
The Boone will not be open for public tours during its visit. However, members of the public may watch the ship receive a cannon salute as it passes Old Fort Jackson National Historic Landmark at approximately 10 am on Saturday, December 6th. Old Fort Jackson is located at 1 Fort Jackson Road, off President Street just east of downtown Savannah. The salute time is approximate and is subject to unannounced changes, so please call Fort Jackson at 232-3945 to make sure the ship has not already passed before you come out.
