It will be at least nine years — and perhaps as long as 33 years — before O.J. Simpson is a free man again.
Repeatedly declaring he was "sorry," an emotional Simpson told a Nevada judge today that he "didn't want to steal anything from anyone."
Judge Jackie Glass responded that his crime — an armed robbery in a Las Vegas hotel room last year — was "much more than stupidity."
Glass is known for imposing tough sentences. After she rattled off a complex series of consecutive and concurrent sentences, even many attorneys were confused about the length of Simpson's sentence.
It turns out that the 61-year-old Simpson could serve up to 33 years, but the judge's clerk says he could be eligible for parole after nine years.
Simpson and former golfing buddy Clarence "C.J." Stewart were convicted in October of 12 criminal charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery. The charges stemmed from a botched attempt to retrieve sports memorabilia and other mementos, including Simpson's first wife's wedding ring, from two collectibles dealers in a hotel room last year.
