Officers are on their way to clearing more than three dozen residential burglaries in the Windsor Forest area of Savannah following the arrest of three burglary suspects in October. Ensuing forensics shows that prints from one of the juveniles arrested come back to at least 37 burglaries.

“This is a text-book case of how the community working in partnership with police can succeed in getting prolific offenders off our streets,” said Metro Police Chief Michael Berkow. “This is also a perfect example of the issues we are having with juveniles on our streets during the day.”

On October 9, an alert neighbor called 9-1-1 around 9:30 a.m. when she spotted three young men acting suspiciously in her neighborhood around Red Oak Drive. Southside Precinct officers, including Precinct Commander Richard Zapal responded immediately and located the car the woman mentioned, ran the tag and discovered the vehicle was stolen. Officers disabled the vehicle and waited for the suspects to return to the car.

One suspect, a 16-year-old came out to the car, spotted police and fled. He was caught a short time later by officers and was in possession of items from the home. The two other suspects did not come out of the house.

Police entered the home and began systematically clearing it with the assistance of a canine. The main portion of the house was empty, but when officers called out the K-9 warning in the attic, the two other suspects, a 16 year-old and 19-year-old Eross Riley, surrendered without incident.

Police located property in the stolen vehicle from at least two other burglaries in the area. The two juveniles were taken to the Regional Youth Detention Center, while Riley was transported to the Chatham County Detention Center. Additional charges are pending against at least one of the juveniles.
