Missing Couple Update: The Latest on the Calverts

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Sheriff PJ Tanner says the case of a missing Hilton Head Island couple is "relatively cold"...

But it is still ongoing and tonight we have new clues into what might have happened to Liz and John Calvert - and the dead man who may be to blame.

The Calverts’ haven't been seen or heard from since March 3rd. More than nine months ago. The couple operated the Harbortown Yacht Basin and Liz was an attorney here in Savannah.

The briefing centered mainly on the acts of Dennis Gerwing...the couple's accountant who took his own life after becoming a person of interest in the case.

Gerwing acknowledged embezzling money from the Calverts.

Among details released today were the contents of Gerwing's last written words.

Part of one note he wrote: "I have acted completely alone in all actions committed. I knew the risks of this happening and believe taking myself out of the game is the best way to move everyone as quickly as possible past all events. All anger should be directed towards me."

So what does all this mean for the Calvert case? Holly Bounds reports.

They say money is the root of all evil---and in this case-- the man who handled John and Liz Calvert’s finances - may have planted the seed....

And the issues that blossomed just too hard to bear.

"The dirt found in his home, the muddy shoes, the shovel, the fact that he had ample time to drive far away from Beaufort county....I mean, these tarps that were purchased by him, were commercial type tarps, large enough to act in the same fashion as a body bag, if you will."

While it seems all fingers point to Dennis Gerwing....Sheriff PJ Tanner says there's still not enough that would bring charges if he were alive.

"There's no evidence of a homicide at this time. We have two people that are missing."

"It's very doubtful that they're alive and well. Of course we would hope that we would find them alive and well today, but things aren't looking good."

Despite the talk--the Calverts' closest friends somehow maintain hope.

"There were a lot of references to them possibly being dead but you always talk in the present tense that they're alive. Will you always keep that up?"  "I'll certainly try to. I mean, we don't have any reason other than the fact that they're not here to believe anything else, so we'll continue to believe that we'll see them and hopefully see them soon."
