The holiday season is a time of joy, a time to spend with family and friends but for some this holiday season will be difficult.
This year alone the Third Infantry Division based out of Fort Stewart lost ninety eight soldiers during their deployment to Iraq.
Today those soldiers, in addition to three hundred nineteen more were remembered.
News Three’s Alice Massimi was at today's Wreaths on Warriors Walk ceremony and brings us the story of one family who lost their son.
It’s not the first time the Allmons have walked down this path, a path known as Warriors Walk.
A living memorial to every Third Infantry Division soldier who has fallen in the line of duty since 2003.
Holding hands the two are here to place a wreath at the foot of their son's tree. 24 year old William Allmon, killed in April when his vehicle hit an I.E.D.
“You know being our son and everything we just lost him this year.... We just wanted to come down and see him, represent and make sure someone was here, “ explains his tearful father William Allmon.
Joined by many of his son's fellow soldiers Allmon is remembered as a man who took his job seriously and believed in what he was doing.
“He was a good all around person. He was a jokester and the glue of the family,“ remembers his dad.
The Allmons are one of many families who traveled across the country for the annual placing of the wreaths on Warriors Walk.
In its second year it began after some were inspired by the laying of wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery.
“We have to show the family members that we haven’t forgotten them,” explains Bruce Muncher one of the co-founders of Wreaths for Warriors Walk.
A gesture Mr. Allmon and his wife appreciate, knowing that their son's sacrifice did not go unnoticed.
“Very proud, it’s just hard to say really …. being our first Christmas without him it's going to be hard, “ Mr. Allmon says fighting back tears.
The four hundred seventeen wreaths placed along Warriors Walk today were all purchased through donations.
