While many of you get to spend Christmas with your family, hundreds of 3rd ID solders can't go home for the holidays.
The group Operation Homefront Georgia held a Christmas party Thursday so troops wouldn't spend the day alone . . . and it was held at an unlikely location.
Hundreds of thousands of people love eating at Hooters. But who knew so many people in the Savannah area would show up to this Southside Hooters on Christmas day?
"We were called by a chaplain who said he was gonna have a bunch of guys sitting in the barracks alone on Christmas day and could we do anything about it?" says Myra Ebner with Operation Homefront Georgia.
She and the rest of the group called their friends at Hooters to put together a Christmas party. The special guests: our soldiers.
"I didn't think anybody was going to be here. I thought it was just going to be a few people," says Joel Shannon an MP with the 3rd ID and one of more than 100 partying at Hooters.
"We all appreciate it a lot because we don't have anything else to do," says Joel.
"For people that have to stay here for Christmas it brings everyone here together as a family and enjoy this time that we have," says Benjamin Cano with the 3rd ID.
Keep in mind those at Hooters are not just those in the military. All the Hooters employees, a full staff, came to work just to give others a Merry Christmas.
"Just for our appreciation for the troops to say thank you. I don't think of anything we could do nicer," says Savannah Hooters manager Bill Mellette.
"When I go to bed at night I know I've made a difference. I've put a smile on somebody's face," says Myra.
Myra says Operation Homefront Georgia hopes to make this an annual event and that's good news for those here. "Definitely they should do it again. I'd be here," says Benjamin.
And for many here, this is just as good as being with their families.
Operation Homefront Georgia is part of a national charity that helps military families during deployments.
