Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found floating in the Savannah River. Boaters found the body in the middle of the river shortly before 1:00 this afternoon and called police.
Metro Police Marine Patrol officers along with Savannah Fire and Emergency Services responded to the call. Emergency crews pulled the body of the unidentified African-American male from the frigid waters and sent it to the GBI Crime Lab.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death. Detectives have made a tentative identification of the body, but are waiting for confirmation through fingerprints before releasing the name.
Authorities say more details will be released as they become available.
