»  Comments | Post a Comment

RIDGELAND, S.C. (AP) - A former Jasper County deputy has been elected sheriff in a special election.

Democrat Gregory Jenkins received about 58 percent of the vote Tuesday to fill the final 10 months of former Sheriff Ben Riley's term.

Riley died in an off-duty crash in Bamberg County in August.

Jenkins defeated Republican Allen Wooten. The 28-year veteran of the South Carolina Highway Patrol was appointed sheriff in September by the governor.
